An Overview of the Private Pilot License Exam

For close to two decades, Desiree Marvin has worked in different roles at Marvin as a communications specialist, instructional designer, and workspace researcher. In addition to her work at Marvin, Desiree Marvin is interested in aviation and holds a Private Pilot License.

A Private Pilot License allows a pilot to fly a single-engine private plane and is often considered the first step toward becoming a commercial pilot. To qualify for a Private Pilot License, candidates must sit for an associated Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) written test.

An average score of 70 percent and above is needed to qualify for a Private Pilot License. To pass the Private Pilot License, an aspiring pilot must pass a knowledge test comprising 60 multiple-choice questions, each with three possible answers. The time limit for the test is 2.5 hours.
